This study traces the emergence of modern interpretation theory and modern philological hermeneutics in Germany 1750-1800. utilizing the insights developed by historical senantics discourse analysis and institutional and disciplinary histories. Rather than taking hermeneutics merely as a set of ideas, it seeks to read it as a discourse, as a historical technology of textual reading. i does not merely focus on individual figures, but shows the institutional and disciplinary framework of the texts.

in contrast, modern philological hemeneutics that begins in the 1770s with Lessing, Hamann, Herder,and Heyne becomes a discourse of conflict, reflexiviy, and inherent instability in which the written text itself makes a claim on the entire interpretative structure of the reader. These texts and those of the young Fridrich Schlegel are shown to take on a contrastive force in the history of humanistic disciplines；Anthropology, History, Psychology, and the Interpretive reading. The final chapter indicates the importance of the theory of the incom-prehersibility of the text, of the autonomous life of discouse in schlegel's work, and places his writing in a tradition that reaches bak to Vico and forward to Hegel, Nietzsche, and Freud.
